`I shall not be alone, for Mrs Stowe will be here,' Ellen said. `Enjoy your visit, Jo. We shall not often get the chance, for Hal will not wish to stay here for ever, and it will not be easy to go in on the public coach—though I believe there is one from the village once a week.'

`Yes, I believe so,' Jo said. `But once I have the things I need, I dare say I shall not need to visit often.'

Mrs Stowe entered the room then with the tea tray. She gave Jo rather an odd look as she set it down, but said nothing. Instead, she bent over the cot and smiled down at the baby.

`Is there anything else you need, ma'am?' she asked Ellen.
